What are My Electric Car Charging Options?

Before you ask “How long does it take to charge an electric car?”, you’ll need to think about which charging method you plan to use: Level 1, Level 2, or Level 3. Here is a brief overview of the three different levels:

  1. Domestic Outlet Home Charging (Regular Outlet): The cheapest option, a Level 1 charge simply uses the typical grounded (three-prong) 110V/120V charging outlet. However, this is the slowest method of charging by far with an average EV charging time of around 24 hours for a full battery.
  2. Installed Brand-Approved Domestic Charging: While a Level 2 charging station requires a professional installation in your Haines City home, it is significantly faster and more convenient. Electric car charging time can be as fast as 80% charge in a half an hour or forty minutes.
  3. Public Charging: When out and about in Lakeland, you can locate public charging stations in locations like parking garages, hotels, malls, and other high-traffic areas. Generally, you’ll find Level 2 charging stations here. But, ultra-quick DC Fast Charging stations are becoming more popular with charging times of an hour or less!

Typical Domestic Charging Electric Car Charging Time

Which charging method fits into your busy lifestyle the best? Take a look at the differences in EV charging time:

  • Level 1 EV charging often takes days to fully charge an electric car.
  • Level 2 EV charging takes hours to fully charge an electric car. A a single night of Level 2 charging can fully recharge most EVs.
  • Level 3 EV charging can fully recharge most EVs in an hour or less, or add significant range in just ten minutes.

Because of the high amount of energy used, Level 3 chargers are typically only found at public charging stations. Most Davenport EV drivers opt for the middle ground of the Level 2 charger, which delivers faster charging speeds from home. What if you have a plug-in hybrid? Plug-in hybrid models require much shorter charging times because they use both electricity and gasoline. That means most plug-ins can charge fully in one to four hours.
