How Do Hybrid Cars Work?

2019 Chevrolet Volt

We’ve all heard about the benefits of hybrid cars, including environmentally-friendly performance and exceptional gas mileage. But, just what is a hybrid car and how does it work? Hybrids utilize both a gas-powered engine and an electricity-powered motor, which creates an ultra-efficient performance with fewer harmful emissions. Since the arrival of the first hybrid, the segment has exploded in popularity around Lakeland and Haines City. Exploring How Hybrid Cars Work

How do hybrid cars work? How does the car decide between electricity and gas? We’re here to walk you through the basics of how hybrid cars work. Here is an overview of the parallel hybrid design, the most common type of hybrid on the roads today:

  • A hybrid model has both a traditional internal combustion engine, which runs on gasoline, and an electric motor, which runs on battery power.
  • Your car will use the power of the battery whenever possible, while flipping to the engine when greater strength is needed.
  • At low speeds, your car won’t use much energy, so it prioritizes the electric motor as a power source.
  • At high speeds, your car switches to the high-octane power of your gas-powered engine for a bigger boost of acceleration.
  • Many hybrids also use regenerative braking, which converts your car’s kinetic energy into electricity when slowing or stopping.

How Hybrid Cars Work vs. Electric Cars

Should you choose a hybrid or an electric car? While hybrids have an engine and motor under the hood, the electric car only has a motor. A hybrid car only needs to be refueled at your normal Davenport gas station and the battery recharges itself as you navigate. The electric car, on the other hand, requires a public or home charging station to top off its battery. So while both have their benefits, they differ quite a bit in their everyday driving experience.
