Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) are what most people think of when they think of an electric vehicle. That’s because these vehicles run completely on electricity. They don’t use any petrol-derived energy and they don’t produce any tailpipe emissions. Instead of an engine, BEVs have one or more motors powered by a battery pack(s). Most electric vehicles have a fully electric range of 200 miles or more, but every EV model in the Chevy lineup has an estimated range of 300 miles or more. If you’re not ready to go fully electric but still want the experience of EV driving, a Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) is a great option. PHEVs allow drivers to use electric energy when they want to and gasoline when they need to. Their powertrain consists of a traditional engine, an electric motor, and a small battery pack. While they don’t have the incredible electric range of BEVs, they can generally provide between 20 to 40 miles of electric-only driving, which is enough to complete a morning commute during the week. Most have three driving modes – electric only, hybrid, and gasoline-only. When the electric power is depleted, the engine automatically takes over.
