What is the Difference Between Used and Certified Pre-Owned?

Car Sales

Are you wondering what the difference is between CPO and used vehicles? While both are considered “used,” there are important distinctions between used and certified pre-owned cars that Lakeland-area drivers need to know about before buying their next car, truck, or SUV.

What to Know About Buying a Used Car

Used vehicles are vehicles previously driven by other owners, and will vary in terms of model year, mileage, and the number of previous owners. Because of this, used vehicles cost less than new and certified pre-owned vehicles. We also carry a selection of used cars under $15,000 at our Winter Haven dealership, and you won’t have to worry about depreciation.

Even though a used vehicle with 100,000 miles may seem risky, many used cars can last for hundreds of thousands of miles with continued routine maintenance and care. Also, remember:

  • Inspect any used vehicle you’re interested in and take it for a test drive before making an offer.
  • Discuss any issues, in terms of vehicle condition or performance that arise, to ensure the vehicle is fit for your needs and safe to drive.
  • Some cars and SUVs can last more than 200,000 miles with proper care and maintenance.

What to Know About Buying a CPO Car

Certified pre-owned vehicles are part of a CPO program, but have to meet the specific requirements. These requirements include:

  • Multi-point inspection
  • Usually less than 80,000 miles, and sometimes up to 100,000 miles
  • Model year is within five years of the current model year
  • Offered with extended warranties and/or limited powertrain warranties

Certified vehicles are usually newer models with less mileage, but can come at a higher price than used cars. However, they’re more affordable than going with a new car.
